Die Sperrbandbreite bezeichnet die Breite des Sperrbereichs, also den Frequenzbereich zwischen der oberen und unteren Grenzfrequenz. Sperrfilter weisen unterschiedliche Dämpfungsgrade auf, die den Grad der Dämpfung des Signals im Sperrbereich relativ zum Signal im Durchlassbereich beschreiben. Einige Sperrfilter können Welligkeiten im Durchlassbereich aufweisen, d. h. Änderungen der Signalverstärkung über einen bestimmten Frequenzbereich. Diese Welligkeiten lassen sich durch Filterdesign und -optimierung minimieren, um die Signalqualität im Durchlassbereich zu gewährleisten. Sperrfilter besitzen typischerweise spezifische Eingangs- und Ausgangsimpedanzen, die an die Impedanzanforderungen der Signalquelle und der Last angepasst sind.
Bandsperrfilter finden in verschiedenen Bereichen breite Anwendung, beispielsweise in Kommunikationssystemen, Audiogeräten, Verstärkern, Radioempfängern usw.
